Building trust as the foundation of a safe and relaxed experience

Fear of dental procedures, also known as dental phobia, often presents a serious challenge for patients and dentists. This fear is the reason patients delay visits to the dentist regardless of the necessity of the required intervention. Inhalation sedation, one of the safe and effective methods of sedation, provides patients with the opportunity to overcome anxiety and receive necessary dental care.

What is inhalation sedation?

Inhalation sedation is a technique used to relax patients during dental procedures. This method represents the inhalation of nitrogen and oxygen, the so-called “laughing gas”. This method allows patients to remain conscious during the procedure, but at the same time to feel relaxed and less sensitive to pain.

The benefits of inhalation sedation are:

  • Fast-acting gas and rapid elimination of fear: Inhalation sedation acts quickly, providing immediate relief from anxiety. This is of paramount importance in situations where patients experience extreme fear of dental procedures.
  • You remain awake, communication with the doctor is preserved: Patients are aware of their surroundings, but feel relaxed and less sensitive to stressful circumstances.
  • Faster recovery from sedation: Unlike intravenous sedation, which requires several hours of recovery, inhalation sedation allows you to drive a motor vehicle after leaving sedation, because it is a gas that is quickly eliminated from the body.
  • Ability to adjust the dose: Dentists can easily adjust the dose of inhalation sedation according to patient needs. This allows precise control of the level of sedation throughout the entire procedure.

You can use inhalation sedation whenever you want to relax, especially during prolonged dental procedures (when extracting or grinding a large number of teeth, when you want to restore multiple teeth in one visit, when placing implants, extracting wisdom teeth, etc.), because these prolonged dental procedures, which even the most patient can get nervous about, can be extremely demanding for patients. Fear of prolonged stays in the dental office can lead to stress and discomfort. Using inhalation sedation in these cases brings the following benefits: you remain relaxed throughout the entire procedure and as a result there is better cooperation between the dentist and the patient, which makes work easier for us dentists and contributes to the efficiency of the procedure itself.

It is important to emphasize that inhalation sedation is not a magic wand that solves all challenges of dental phobia. The key to success lies in building trust between doctor and patient. In our office, in addition to providing technical expertise, we pay special attention to the emotional needs of our patients. Communication, empathy, and careful listening to the patient and their wishes and needs play a key role in building trust.

Patients often experience fear due to the unknown or previous negative experiences. That is why we, as dentists, are here to actively work on building trust by creating an atmosphere where patients feel heard and supported. Inhalation sedation, as part of this holistic approach, becomes a tool that contributes to a sense of safety, but cannot replace the warm and supportive relationship between dentist and patient.

Ultimately, the integration of inhalation sedation with a careful approach and sense of trust enables patients not only to overcome their fear of dental procedures, but also to build long-term trust in their dentist. When this harmony is achieved, dental treatments become not only medical care but also a positive experience that encourages regular visits and oral health care.
