Teeth are immensely important for people. Unfortunately, people often become aware of that only when they start losing one tooth or even more. Tooth loss leads to a lot of problems. Chewing problem is the most obvious one. Moreover, it can even result in digestion problems, which can later cause general health deterioration. Additionally, there are also speech problems as well as aesthetic problems that often cause a lack of self-confidence. However, if a tooth has to be extracted, a dental implant is the best solution. Whether you have lost one tooth or all your teeth, dental implants are the right choice for you.

What are dental implants and how do dental implants work?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is embedded in a jawbone and represents an artificial root. An artificial crown is placed on it with an abutment screw (a connection between an implant and a crown), which is an excellent solution if a tooth is missing. Dental implants can also serve as a fixed prosthetic device (bridge) or prosthesis if more teeth are missing.

The main reason why dental implants are considered the best solution to replace missing teeth is the process of ossteointegration. It is a process during which a dental implant is connected to a surrounding jawbone and becomes a part of it. Therefore, after installing implants they look like real teeth and have a natural look.

Nowadays, implant placement is considered the best solution to tooth loss, and it is a routine procedure with as much as 96% success. Although the process of implant placement with a crown lasts between 3 and 4 months, this will not affect your everyday life activities too much, as a temporary prosthesis or crown can be obtained during the transitional period.

The whole implant placement procedure consists of several stages:

  • Firstly, after anamnesis, patients have a check-up and are sent to make a 3D image based on which an appropriate treatment plan is arranged.
  • Afterwards, there is a surgical part of the procedure. If a patient still has a tooth/teeth, but they are to be extracted, teeth extraction is performed, after which implant placement is carried out if there are enough bones. If a patient already misses a tooth/teeth, implant placement is carried out immediately.
  • 3 to 4 months should pass after implant placement. During that period osseointegration takes place and, in the meanwhile, a patient uses a temporary prosthesis.
  • Once osseointegration process has completed, bite registration is taken to make artificial crowns, fixed dental prosthesis, or prosthesis.
  • Finally, when a dental crown, a fixed dental prosthesis (bridge) or prosthesis are made, they are placed on implants.

What to choose – an artificial crown, a fixed dental prosthesis (bridge) or a dental prosthesis?

It has already been mentioned that a dental implant can serve as a carrier to an artificial crown, a fixed dental prosthesis (bridge) or prosthesis. Each of these solutions has advantages and drawbacks.

Artificial crowns

Artificial crown placement implies that for each crown there is one dental implant. This solution is ideal for the cases when one or a few implants are needed. This situation is the simplest, and for patients, it is the best replacement for their own teeth. Patients will not have any functional problems. Dental crowns can be made in almost the same matching shade as patients’ own teeth, so nobody can tell the difference.

Implant placement is a far better solution than making dental bridges. Dental bridges imply drilling down adjacent teeth, while with implant placement with artificial crown adjacent teeth are completely preserved. Furthermore, since dental implants replace a tooth root, then the pressure is put on a jaw bone which prevents resorption, i.e. bone loss. This is not the same with bridges. Due to all abovementioned, an implant is the best solution for a missing tooth.

Fixed prosthetic device (bridge)

A fixed dental prosthesis (bridge) is an excellent solution when patients have no tooth (toothlessness). It can be attached to dental implants, whose number should be 6 to 8 per jaw. The greater the number, the better it is; regarding its functionality and stability.

A fixed dental prosthesis (bridge) can return up to 90% of patients’ sensation or feeling that they used to have with natural teeth. For toothlessness, it is the best solution. The problem can be the price, because every dental implant is paid separately. In addition, an additional issue may be insufficient width or height of a jaw bone that prevents implant placement. In some cases, it is possible to manage it by special intervention – tooth ridge augmentation or sinus lift intervention (sinusitis).

Dental prosthesis

A dental prosthesis is another solution that manages the problem of toothlessness. It is attached to implants via locators that serve as prosthesis stabilizers. The required number of implants and locators is 2 to 4 per jaw, which is less than it is necessary for a fixed dental prosthesis. Thus, this is a cheaper solution.

However, a dental prosthesis is less comfortable than fixed dental prosthesis, so it returns only about 60% of sensation or feeling. Unlike a fixed dental prosthesis, prosthesis can be taken off for better oral hygiene.

Dental implant home care

A very important thing after making crowns on implants is flawless oral hygiene and regular check-ups. It is necessary to regularly brush your teeth, use a special dental floss, and interdental brushes. Proper education and the importance of oral hygiene are presented to patients before and after the complete therapy with dental implants.

Types of dental implants

There are various types of tooth implants, therefore, various prices of implants. Quality, reliability, and success rate of implants determine the price of dental implants.

Naturally, our dental office uses only the best types of dental implants that have proven to be the best choice because of their ideal implant surface for osseointegration, decades of clinical researches, and high success rate. We use exclusively the brands of world-renowned companies.
