Inhalation Sedation in Belgrade

No fear and no discomfort at the dentist. DentalVortex clinic offers the latest technology to ensure you feel completely calm and stable during your exam or procedure.

You know that feeling when you just think about the dental chair and your stomach tightens? It’s not unusual.

Fear of the dentist, known as dentophobia, is one of the most common reasons people put off necessary dental exams and treatments for years. Often it’s not just the fear of pain, but that unsettling sense of helplessness as you sit in silence, listening to the sound of instruments that triggers an instinctive urge to flee. Waiting, unfortunately, only brings higher costs and more complex procedures.

At DentalVortex clinic we have a solution that transforms the dental visit experience from the ground up. Inhalation sedation, also known as laughing gas, allows you to be completely relaxed during treatment — no fear, no tension, and no unpleasant sensations.

What is inhalation sedation?

Inhalation sedation is a method of relaxing the patient by breathing a mixture of nitrous oxide (a completely safe and harmless gas that has been used in medicine for decades) and oxygen through a small mask placed over the nose.

inhalation sedation

Nitrous oxide, better known as laughing gas, produces a warm, pleasant feeling of relaxation within the first few breaths. Fear and tension fade away, while you remain awake, aware, and able to communicate with your dentist. No needles. No intravenous administration. Just a mask on your nose and the feeling that everything is passing gently.

We use the Baldus Touch device from a renowned German manufacturer, which allows us to precisely dose the gas mixture and tailor it to each individual patient in order to achieve an optimal level of relaxation and comfort.

Who is inhalation sedation for?

Inhalation sedation is an ideal choice for patients who want a completely worry-free and relaxed dental procedure. Consider it if:

  • You have a pronounced fear of the dentist or dental instruments

  • You are anxious about the sounds during procedures (drill, equipment, suction)

  • You are afraid of needles or receiving local anesthesia

  • You have a pronounced gag reflex that makes dental exams difficult

  • You are planning an oral surgery procedure and want to be as relaxed as possible

  • Your child is afraid of or uncomfortable going to the dentist and has difficulty cooperating during treatment

Sedation is not only for those with a “severe” fear. Even if you are simply nervous or anxious, laughing gas can make your time in the clinic a considerably more pleasant experience.

What does the sedation procedure look like?

We know that patients who are afraid of the dentist especially appreciate knowing exactly what to expect. That is why we describe the entire inhalation sedation process for you:

1

Pre-treatment consultation

First of all, your dentist will talk with you about your fears, your health status, and any potential contraindications. Together we assess whether sedation is the right solution for you.

2

Placing the mask

A small, lightweight mask is placed over your nose through which you begin to breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen (completely safe for your health). The mask is comfortable and does not interfere with communication.

3

Onset of effect and monitoring

After just a few breaths you feel a warm, pleasant sense of relaxation. Throughout the entire procedure, our team continuously monitors your vital parameters (pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory parameters), ensuring maximum safety and precise process control.

4

Dental procedure

While you are in a relaxed state, your dentist performs the planned procedure. You are awake, able to communicate, and able to respond. No unpleasant sensations, no panic.

5

End of sedation

After just a few minutes of breathing pure oxygen at the end of the procedure, the nitrous oxide leaves your body quickly, you return to your normal state, and you are free to continue with all your everyday activities.

Is inhalation sedation safe?

This is a question almost every patient asks, and the answer is clear: yes, inhalation sedation is one of the safest forms of sedation available.

Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for more than 160 years. It is one of the longest and most thoroughly studied sedatives in the world. It is not toxic, does not cause allergic reactions, does not accumulate in the body, and leaves the body completely as soon as the treatment is finished.

It is safe for both adults and children, and is especially recommended because it eliminates fear and improves cooperation during procedures.

When is inhalation sedation not recommended?

Inhalation sedation is safe for the vast majority of patients. However, like any medical procedure, there are situations in which we do not use it. We list them here because we believe every patient deserves complete information before making a decision. Sedation is not recommended if:

  • You have had eye surgery in the past 6 months

  • You are receiving treatment with the drug Bleomycin

  • You have pulmonary emphysema or pulmonary bullae

  • You have a diagnosis of pneumothorax or ileus

  • You are pregnant, in any trimester

If you find yourself in any of these situations, that does not mean we cannot help you. There are other ways to make your treatment as comfortable as possible, and we will discuss them at your first visit.

Frequently asked questions about inhalation sedation

Yes, completely. Inhalation sedation does not put the patient to sleep. You are awake, able to communicate with your dentist, and able to respond throughout the entire procedure. The difference is that you are relaxed, without fear and without tension.
No. The mask placed over your nose is small and comfortable. The gas has no unpleasant smell or taste. The only things most patients feel are warmth, a mild tingling in the hands, and drowsiness — all of which are completely normal.
The effect lasts as long as you are breathing the gas, meaning throughout the entire procedure. As soon as the mask is removed and you begin breathing pure oxygen, the effect fades quickly. After just a few minutes you feel normal.
Yes. Nitrous oxide leaves the body very quickly and has no residual effects like general anesthesia. However, we recommend planning your first drive at least 15 to 20 minutes after the end of the treatment, once you are certain you are fully stable.
Absolutely. Inhalation sedation is especially suitable for children who are afraid of the dentist or have difficulty cooperating during treatment. The procedure is gentle, brief, and completely safe.
We recommend not having a large meal within 2 hours before the treatment. A light meal is fine. At your appointment we will give you all the specific instructions tailored to your case.
Inhalation sedation can be combined with most dental procedures, from simple exams and tooth extractions to oral surgery procedures. At your appointment we will assess whether sedation is appropriate for your specific case.
Dentophobia is a fear of dental treatments and is one of the most widespread phobias in general. It is completely normal and nothing to be ashamed of. That is precisely why solutions like inhalation sedation exist, and we are accustomed to working with patients who carry that fear with them.
