Teeth whitening is one of the most sought-after aesthetic dental procedures today. It is a procedure that removes discolorations (changes in color) from the tooth enamel and dentin, making the teeth visibly brighter.

White teeth are not just about aesthetics. A smile you feel good about also affects your self-confidence in everyday life.

Why teeth change color

A change in tooth color is a natural process, but it can also be the result of certain habits or conditions. It is important to understand the cause, because it can affect which whitening method gives the best result.

External and internal discolorations External discolorations occur on the surface of the teeth, most often due to daily consumption of coffee, tea, red wine or pigment-rich foods. Smoking is another common cause.

Internal discolorations affect the very structure of the tooth. They can be the result of using certain medications (such as tetracycline) in early childhood, tooth trauma, or natural aging during which the dentin becomes darker. Non-vital teeth (teeth whose nerve has been removed) are a special category and require a special approach to whitening.

Teeth whitening methods we offer

At Dental Vortex, four whitening methods are available, each with its own application.

In-office teeth whitening

In-office whitening is performed at the clinic, in a single visit that lasts about an hour. The dentist applies a high-concentration teeth whitening gel, after protecting the gums and soft tissues. The gel works in cycles of about 15 minutes, which are repeated two to three times. This method is suitable for patients who want visible results in a short time, without the need to wear a tray at home. The results are visible immediately after the treatment.

Laser teeth whitening

Laser teeth whitening is a variant of in-office whitening in which the whitening gel is activated by a laser. The laser accelerates the chemical reaction of the gel and enables the active substances to penetrate deeper into the tooth enamel in a shorter time, which can enhance the final whitening effect.

At the Dental Vortex clinic we use the Biolase Epic 10, a diode laser with a wavelength of 940 nm. This laser enables precise and controlled activation of the gel, with minimal heating of the surrounding tissue. The procedure lasts about an hour, and the results are visible immediately. The price of laser teeth whitening is 28,000 RSD.

At-home teeth whitening

Home whitening involves making a custom tray (splint), which is made according to an impression of your jaw. The tray serves as a holder for a lower-concentration whitening gel. It is worn at night, over a period of seven to ten days. The effect is gradual but long-lasting. On average, the whiteness lasts up to two years, and when refreshing the treatment it takes only a few days. An advantage of this method is that you can monitor your progress day by day and, if necessary, adjust the duration of the therapy in consultation with your dentist.

Whitening of a non-vital tooth

A non-vital tooth is a tooth whose nerve has previously been removed, most often as part of endodontic treatment (root canal treatment). Such teeth are prone to darkening from the inside and do not respond well to standard whitening methods. To whiten them, an internal technique is used: the whitening agent is applied directly into the interior of the tooth and is changed over several follow-up visits. After the procedure is completed, a definitive filling is placed. The procedure usually requires two to three follow-up visits.

What the in-office whitening procedure looks like

Regardless of whether it is classic in-office or laser whitening, the procedure follows the same sequence of steps. The only difference is in the way the gel is activated – by lamp, by laser, or chemically. The entire procedure is painless and lasts about an hour.

Teeth whitening gel The teeth whitening gel is an agent based on carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide that breaks down pigments in the structure of the tooth enamel and dentin. The concentration of the gel varies depending on the method: high-concentration gels are used at the clinic, while milder gels that are safe for everyday use are used for at-home teeth whitening.

What to do before teeth whitening

Whitening is not performed on unhealthy teeth. Before starting the procedure, it is necessary to:

• remove dental tartar and soft deposits (air polishing and polishing)

• treat cavities

• treat any gum inflammation or other active processes in the mouth

Only when the teeth are healthy and clean can the whitening effect lead to the maximum possible results. These steps are not optional but are a prerequisite for a safe and effective procedure.

Does teeth whitening hurt and is it harmful

Teeth whitening carried out under the supervision of a dentist, using clinically approved agents, is not harmful to the tooth enamel or dentin. The only possible discomfort is temporary tooth sensitivity during or immediately after the procedure. It occurs because the peroxide passes through the enamel to the dentin and can irritate the tooth nerve. This sensitivity goes away on its own, usually within one to two days. If you have pronounced tooth sensitivity, the dentist can adjust the concentration of the gel or recommend a toothpaste for sensitive teeth during the treatment period.

The agents we use at Dental Vortex are clinically tested and approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). It is important to know: home whitening methods based on baking soda, lemon juice or strawberry juice are not safe. They can damage the enamel and permanently increase tooth sensitivity.

What to do after whitening

After whitening, the teeth are somewhat more porous and more prone to re-absorbing pigments. In the first 48 hours, the so-called “white diet” is recommended: avoid coffee, tea, red wine, dark-colored juices, tomato sauce and anything that could stain white fabric. In the long term, whiteness is maintained through regular oral hygiene: brushing twice a day, using dental floss and having regular dental checkups. For smokers and people who drink coffee every day, the result after whitening may start to fade sooner.

How long the whitening effect lasts

The results of professional teeth whitening last on average from one to two years. How long the whiteness will last depends on several factors: the frequency of consuming coffee, tea and red wine, smoking habits, as well as the regularity of oral hygiene. In patients who take care of their diet and regularly maintain their teeth, the effect lasts longer. Smokers and people who drink coffee every day may notice that the color starts to fade sooner.

At-home teeth whitening using the tray method has the advantage that the treatment can be easily refreshed – just a few nights of wearing the tray with gel are enough to bring the whiteness back to the desired level. The treatment can be safely repeated, without risk to enamel health, in consultation with your dentist.
