Laser root canal treatment

The key to successful root canal treatment is the complete elimination of bacteria. This is where the laser makes a real difference. Laser light penetrates every part of the canal, including areas that conventional instruments struggle to reach, resulting in more thorough disinfection.

The result is a lower risk of re-infection, faster recovery, and better long-term chances of saving the tooth. We also use the laser in treating cysts and periapical lesions – infections that develop in the bone around the tip of the root. Periodontitis (periodontal disease) is a disease of the gums and the bone tissue that holds the teeth. One of the main causes is bacteria that accumulate in periodontal pockets – the space between the tooth and the gum that becomes progressively deeper as the disease advances.

The laser acts in two ways here: it destroys bacteria deep inside the pocket and simultaneously reduces inflammation, creating the conditions for the gum to reattach to the tooth. During the treatment the patient feels only mild warmth. Laser therapy for periodontal pockets is increasingly recommended today as a first step in treatment, before surgical intervention is considered.

Laser frenectomy

A frenum is a fibrous band of tissue in the oral cavity. There are three types: labial, lingual, and buccal. When they are overly pronounced, they can cause problems in children (gaps between teeth or speech issues) or in adults (interference with dentures). Laser removal is especially well suited for children: the procedure is brief, painless, there is no bleeding or stitching, and recovery is fast.

Does laser treatment hurt and what to expect

This is a question that almost every patient asks before their first laser treatment, and it is understandable why. The short answer is: in most cases, no.

The laser exerts no mechanical pressure on the tissue, there is no vibration, and there are no instruments that create the unpleasant sensation patients remember from past experiences. What is most commonly felt is mild warmth at the treatment site, which fades as soon as the laser stops. For soft-tissue procedures anesthesia is usually required, while for root canal treatment it depends on the case. If you have heightened sensitivity or anxiety, local anesthesia is always an option.

Recovery is quick. Mild sensitivity on the first day is possible, but swelling and bleeding are rare. Most patients return to their normal activities immediately.
