In the last twenty years, laser technology has become quite advanced; therefore, it is being applied widely in dentistry as well. Dental lasers are now increasingly used as highly practical devices in dentistry. The reason for this is their multiple application with several important advantages over traditional methods.

What is a diode laser used for in dentistry?
A diode laser is used in many dental procedures. Here are some interventions:
- teeth whitening
- root desensitization (reduction of tooth sensitivity)
- wisdom teeth circumcision (removing area around wisdom teeth during their eruption)
- sulcus preparation for taking
- tooth prints for dental prosthetic devices without unpleasant use of threads
- removing excess gum prior to placing composite seal
drenching abscesses - opening of implants (before making crowns)
- pain therapy
The most common interventions in which dental lasers are used are periodontal pockets, frenectomy, root canal treatment, mouth ulcer and herpes treatment. These interventions will be more explained in the text below.
Before explaining these interventions, we are going to highlight some of laser’s main advantages over other methods in dentistry:
- There is no bleeding – lasers stimulate coagulation and there is no bleeding
- No sewing – lasers close wounds, so the process of sewing is not necessary
- Painless – laser interventions are performed with little anesthesia or without anesthesia at all
- More precise – the absence of bleeding provides dentists greater transparency, which increases the precision of their work
- Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect – lasers contribute to the destruction of bacteria and the removal of infected tissue
Tooth root treatment
A tooth root treatment removes the infected and damaged pulp from a root canal, after which it is filled with a non-active material. To make the therapy fully effective, it is essential to clean a root canal completely.
A dental laser has antibacterial effect. The advantage of a laser method over other methods is that laser light penetrates all the parts of a root canal, so that the canal can be fully cleaned.
Mouth ulcers and herpes treatment
Mouth ulcers are wounds in the mouth. Their exact cause is unknown, but it is assumed that they appear due to genetic predispositions, as well as stress, poor hygiene, decline in immunity and poor nutrition, lack of vitamins and minerals. There is no cure for mouth ulcers, so therapies are used to relieve the symptoms.
If no therapeutic methods are used, mouth ulcers heal in 7-15 days. If treated with a certain method, they can disappear in 3-5 days. However, dental laser is the most effective form of therapy. The laser speeds up the healing process. Ultimately, mouth ulcers can be completely removed after only one treatment.
Herpes are small wounds caused by a viral infection. They can occur in a mouth on gums, lips or in the throat. Herpes can be very unpleasant: firstly, there is itching and burning sensation, and then there are blisters and scabies. A mouth ulcer and herpes treatment with a laser therapy is very fast and effective. It is recommended to apply laser therapy at the onset of symptoms. Normally, 1-2 treatments are needed.

Periodontal pockets
A periodontal pocket is a space between gums and teeth that is suitable for the accumulation of bacteria from tooth plaque. Gum inflammation, gum withdrawal and periodontitis are just some of negative consequences resulting from these bacteria.
A dental laser is an excellent therapeutic solution for periodontal pockets. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect of laser light contributes to the destruction of bacteria and thus maximizes cleaning of periodontal pockets. Additionally, gums get attached to teeth again. The whole procedure is painless and a patient can feel only mild heat.
A laser dental periodontal pocket therapy is an extremely effective first stage for the treatment of paradentosis. This is why this type of therapy is strongly recommended.
