How to brush your teeth properly?

In addition to oral hygiene set, it is important to brush your teeth properly. The technique of proper tooth brushing consists of the following:

  • A toothbrush is placed parallel to teeth, at an angle of 45 degrees to the tooth axis.
  • A toothbrush is rotated upwards when brushing lower teeth, or downwards when brushing upper teeth with several repetitions. Brush the inside and outside part of all teeth in the same way.
  • To brush biting surfaces, a toothbrush should be moved from backwards to the front.

In this way, plaque is removed in the most efficient way from teeth and gums without moving it between teeth or below gums. Jaws are brushed separately, not at the same time and horizontal movements during brushing are not advisable.

In our office, it is possible to get training for proper tooth brushing with a detailed demonstration of the technique and additional advice regarding the choice of an oral hygiene set.

What is needed to maintain oral hygiene properly?

Basic oral hygiene set consists of a toothbrush and toothpaste. It is necessary to brush your teeth with a toothbrush and a paste at least twice a day. The choice of toothpaste can vary from patient to patient. If you do not know yet which one suits you best, our experts can help you with the selection.

For a better effect, it is recommended to use an electric toothbrush that is especially suitable for persons with fixed prostheses, implants, fixed prosthetic devices (crowns, bridges).

Dental floss is also recommended since toothbrushes cannot reach all the places around teeth. An interdental toothbrush can also be used for the same purpose.

Since there are different sizes of interdental brushes, you can consult the dentists from our dental office when choosing the right one for you.

Waterpik Waterflosser proved to be very useful. It is used at home, and especially recommended for people suffering from periodontal disease as well as people with fixed dentures and fixed prosthetic devices.

Why is oral hygiene important?

It is well-known that oral hygiene is important for preserving oral health. Tooth preservation is essential both for teeth themselves and for the health of the whole organism. Plaque constantly accumulates on teeth, that is, a colourless, sticky mass that consists of bacteria.

Therefore, plaque is the cause of tooth decay (e.g. caries) and gums disease (periodontitis). In order to avoid such unpleasant experience, pain, gum bleeding and swelling, oral hygiene is absolutely necessary.

That is not all whatsoever! Teeth have an important function in chewing food and are an important element in the entire digestive system. Tooth loss, therefore, leads to negative effects on the whole digestion process. Furthermore, poor oral hygiene can lead to heart, lungs, bones, pancreas, and ovaries problems. Periodontal disease has been proven to be associated with infectious endocarditis, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease and heart attack, as well as stroke. Chronic inflammation of the tissue around teeth caused by bacteria can lead to the infection of other organs. Bacteria penetrate circulation, stay in different places in the body and bring about initial manifestations and development of systemic diseases.

Oral hygiene is extremely important for pregnant women. Due to hormonal imbalances, pregnant women are additionally susceptible to gingivitis (gum inflammation) due to plaque bacteria. Paradontontal diseases increase the risk of premature birth or underweight of newborns, so teeth and gum care are of paramount importance to pregnant women.
